Press Release: Aphane Speaks To Coal Producers On Capital Reallocation

On 20 August, Bontle Aphane, CEO of Arnot Opco is speaking at the virtual edition of Johannesburg Indaba. In this Coal Industry Day presentation, Aphane will examine why coal producers need to rethink capital allocation given the current market dynamics. The coal mining industry was already facing a slump due to the ongoing economic crisis in South Africa, the Covid-19 has brought additional challenges that call for urgent rethinking.

During this online discussion, Aphane will join industry peers in deliberating on how the coal industry is changing, what the international trends are and what the future might hold. Key stakeholders in the coal industry will discuss and debate the way forward for the coal sector in Southern Africa post Covid-19.

“The current economic crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic means we must go back to the drawing board and rethink our strategies”, said Aphane. Aphane is the youngest female CEO in the South African coal mining industry. She was previously Exxaro’s Senior Electrical Engineer at Arnot Coal Mine. And has led the relaunch of the now worker-owned Arnot Opco. The Arnot Opco Coal Mine is owned by employees, communities, and Wescoal.

The Joburg Indaba is a respected industry platform where critical issues affecting all stakeholders in the mining industry are unpacked.
